BS EN 13036-4 vehicle skid resistance testing

BS EN 13036 describes the use of the Pendulum Skid Tester to measure the skid resistance of road/runway surfaces. We can offer the same accurate and impartial skid test service that benefits our pedestrian slip risk assessment clients.

Grip Potential's vehiclular skid testing service

Whilst outside the remit of pedestrian slip risk assessment, the BS EN 13036 method is very similar to BS 7976, even briefly superceding it for a time.  We can offer measurement using the same experienced operators with the same UKAS calibrated equipment, but we regret that we cannot offer the same level of post-test guidance, as our expertise is focused on pedestrian slip risk.

The pendulum skid tester was widely adopted for the testing of road and runway surfaces shortly after its conception. Road note 27 describes the method of testing and classification of results, the first edition being published in 1960.  Whilst there are now a wide range of methods to measure the skid resistance of roads and runways, BS EN 13036 remains a useful addition, particularly for accident investigation.

vehicle skid resistance testing
Determination of the skid resistance of a helideck situated on an oil rig. In this safety critical environment accurate measurement of CoDF is essential.

vehicle skid resistance testing
BS EN 13036 testing to determine the effect of mud deposited on a road from a nearby quarry. Results vindicated the quarry owner who was being blamed for a spate of accidents on the sharp bend.

vehiclular skid testing service
BS EN 13036 testing of a military brake testing area.  Vehicles would be run up to speed and the brakes applied on a short section of abrasive concrete.  Testing was used to monitor the skid resistance over time with weathering, wear and rubber deposits all having an effect.
